The Role of Self-Interest in Resolving Disparities Between Northern and Global Southern Societies
Dr. Victor N. Accam, Author
Dr. Victor Narh Accam offers an alternative approach to seeking solutions to the problems present in the political economies of the Global South, more specifically African countries practicing multi-party democracy. Obvious causes of the developmental gaps have been shown through numerous research studies, publications, and speeches. The practice of democratic dispensations has been suggested and implemented in most of the Global South as a panacea that would lead to the expected development. But despite the promising nature of this ideology, it has instead led to frustration.
The mental faculties needed are driven by self-interest or aggregated self-interest. The author focuses on self-interest, which is a natural psychological disposition. This is the concept which can influence and shape key components of the solution, including security, revenue collection, public purchasing, law, job creation, education, local government, and political participation.
The author explains the path to a viable solution by using a basic equation that combines natural resources and mental faculties to achieve greater creation of property. At times using imagined Socratic-style dialogues between two people, Accam provides not just theory but practical examples of how his concepts can be applied in the real world.
Dr. Accam discusses his book during his television interview here.
